The Hound of the Baskervilles according to an official of the Criminal Investiga- tion Department is 'not only the best Sherlock Holmes long story, it is one of the best of all crime novels,' It certainly holds the reader in suspense as few murder stories do. Its combina- tion of horrot% homicidal villainy, the fogs of remote Dartmoor, the Basker- ville Curse 'a great black beast shaped like a hound', are unforgettable and Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are at their best.
This the third or fourth read for me. The surprises are gone, but the read itself remains worthwhile.
